Year 5

Welcome to Year 5.

Children in Year 5 take their faith very seriously. In addition to regular participation at Mass, children are given the opportunity to conduct and lead their own prayer services for our class using the Wednesday Word for guidance.

Our prayer table is the focal point of our classroom, dressed in accordance with the colours of the liturgical calendar. Our prayer table has a 'prayer box,' where children are given the opportunity to privately deposit their own petitions to God, as well as a 'worry box' where the children can write down any worries they may have. This is then checked regularly by the class teacher. Any issues that arise from the worry box are dealt with via a whole class approach during RE and PSHE lessons.

In Year 5 we use a creative approach as the basis for all our work, having seen improved results in terms of children's enthusiasm, achievement, confidence and self-esteem. Real life experiences and a connected curriculum where children are immersed through things that interest them, drama, art, visitors, music and off site visits have really made a difference to the children in our school.

We normally have English and Maths lessons in the morning and cover History, Geography, RE, PE, computing, Art, Science, music, D&T and PSHE in the afternoon.

Year 5 are very lucky to have the opportunity to take part in 'The Hagley Pyramid Concert', a musical concert at Birmingham Town Hall each February. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and something they thoroughly enjoy! We usually go on two class trips in Year 5.

During Year 5 we join Year 6 on a residential visit for two nights away. Places visited include Alton Castle, Astley Burf and Edgmond Hall. We also have an offsite visit to enhance our learning during the Summer term.

In Year 5, children receive either English and Maths homework each week, together with spellings and times tables revision in preparation for the '100 Club'. Homework is always set on a Friday and must be handed in on the following Friday. Spellings and times tables tests take place on Friday mornings.

In Year 5, children become more independent about completing their homework on time. Children can always ask their teacher about their homework task, other than on the day the work is due in!
